Manchester United submit new Jarrad Branthwaite bid to Everton - report

Manchester United have returned with a new bid for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, according to Chris Wheeler.

The Daily Mail journalist reported via X on 8 July that the Old Trafford club have come back with an offer worth a total of £50million for the centre-back.

The bid breaks down as a £45m up-front fee with a further £5m in add-ons as the chase for 22-year-old continues.

The Toffees previously rejected an offer that was a long way short of their £70m asking price, when a “derisory” offer of £35m plus £8m in add-ons was turned down last month [Telegraph, 14 June].

Everton have been nothing if not consistent so far in their insistence to hold out for what they believe Branthwaite is worth.

So it would be hugely surprising if this improved offer drew any sort of different response than the first one did.

The 30 June deadline for profit and sustainability moves to be done for the previous accounting period, which would suggest that the club are only going to be more steadfast in their refusal to do a cut-price deal.

The latest news does however indicate that the door is now closed on this potential deal as had been suspected, with INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe having been left frustrated by the stance at Goodison Park and moved on to investigate a move for Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt.

A new bid from Old Trafford was therefore deemed unlikely [i News, 1 July] but that has clearly proven wide of the mark.
