Mark Wilson has slammed Rangers for repeating the transfer “spiral” and attacked the club’s transfer policy.
Wilson spoke on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (16 July), and belated Rangers for undergoing heavy transfer business “every year”.
Rangers have already signed six players this summer and allowed Borna Barisic and John Lundstram to leave on free transfers to Trabzonspor with four more players leaving the club.
He said: “That’s been the problem for so many years. Rangers seem to be in the cycle now that that’s what happens every year.
“They go through this cycle, they get players out, they bring all these players in – before you know it you hit Christmas and you’re already talking about another window and Rangers fans have made their minds up about some of these players. They’re not good enough so let’s loan them out and get other ones in.
“They just get in a spiral where they get no consistency at all.”
What is wrong with the Rangers transfer policy?
Rangers have brought in 26 players and let 29 players leave the club in the past three seasons alone (Transfermarkt).
Wilson’s former club Celtic have signed 23 players and sold 25 players during that time, the high outlay on incoming and outgoings each season is not just representative of Rangers.
The Gers once had the highest average length of stay for a player in the Scottish Premiership with a 29.7-month average compared to a 22.3 average across the league (The Athletic, 18 November 2021).
Philippe Clement is gearing up for another season of changes as he looks to finally piece together a side capable of toppling Celtic.
Clement needs to find a balance between moving a player on because they are not good enough and a major squad overhaul.
Not long before a Rangers fan buys a home shirt with their favourite player on the back, they need to buy a new one because the player has left.
The current transfer policy at the club is not sustainable for long-term success, which can be attributed to many factors varying from the player treating Scotland as a stepping stone to the player not being good enough to play at the Ibrox.
The club need to seriously assess their recruitment strategy this summer and put together a plan that can be successful long-term.
It is an impossible task for any manager to find stability when the club is being treated as a revolving door.
