Pundit backs Clement to look to 'Shift' exit-linked Rangers star after pre-season absence

Philippe Clement will be looking to “shift” Todd Cantwell during the transfer window after recent developments in Glasgow, according to Mark Wilson.

The Englishman enjoyed a mixed campaign under Clement last term and is yet to feature for the Light Blues in pre-season having been linked with a summer move to the Saudi Pro League [The Scottish Sun, 4 July].

While Clyde 1 pundit Wilson admits he isn’t sure how Cantwell’s future will pan out in Glasgow, he believes the Rangers boss will be eager to replace the midfielder with a more consistent performer.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (16 July) he said: “Cantwell is an interesting one. When you saw how Cantwell’s season panned out, there’s no doubt he’s got talent, but the way his relationship with Clement played out.

“That told the story. If you’ve got your high earners and your big players or match-winners and you’ve got games coming up and you say this isn’t the game for them, then you’re probably looking to shift them on to get high earners in you can rely on.

“That’s why I think that will be an interesting one, I’m not sure how that one will play out.”

Will Todd Cantwell exit Rangers amid Saudi Pro League transfer speculation?

As Wilson suggests, Cantwell’s current situation under Clement is an interesting one as despite appearing to have all the talent in the world, he cannot hold down a consistent place in the Belgian’s starting XI.

Too often in the biggest games of the season, he becomes completely anonymous and lets the match pass him by without having an impact. That is why Clement has felt the need to leave him out of Old Firm matches in the past.

It does seem ridiculous that the Light Blues would be willing to pay a player that sort of wage if they don’t think he is capable of playing season-defining matches. That money could definitely be better spent elsewhere.

Whether or not Rangers will be able to find a buyer for the Englishman remains to be seen. If somebody makes them a genuine offer for his services in the coming weeks, Clement would surely be inclined to accept it.
