'Massive, Traumatic' – talkSPORT host shares what Rangers people have told him at Ibrox

Rangers are currently in a “traumatic” period amid a massive power struggle in the boardroom at Ibrox, Alan Brazil has said.

Speaking on talkSPORT with Gabby Agbonlahor (26 September, 9:58am), Brazil said that people in the know at Ibrox have told him how precarious the situation is within the club’s hierarchy.

John Bennett’s recent resignation has thrown the club into further turmoil, but major shareholder Dave King’s desire to return to the board has been rebuffed by interim chairman John Gilligan.

Brazil said: “It’s chaos at Rangers. People tell me things – people who know what they’re talking about, and it’s traumatic at the moment at Rangers.

“There’s a massive, massive power struggle going on with the board – people want in, they won’t let them in, who’s got the shares?

“The ex-chairman wants to come back in, they’re saying – ‘no, we don’t want you, thank you very much, but you’re not coming in here’ – so, God knows what’s going to give.”

Rangers need to find a way out of power struggle at Ibrox

At some point in the not-too-distant future, a resolution must be found in the boardroom in order for the Gers to draw a line underneath the chaos which has engulfed the club on and off the field recently.

Bennett’s resignation for health reasons was never likely to lead to a smooth transition, but the back and forth comments from Gilligan and King certainly aren’t helping to give fans much optimism.

Many fans will be dreaming of an entirely clean slate and for the club’s entire hierarchy to be replaced, but the prospect of big-money, exterior investment has already been rubbished by King [Rangers Review, 27 August].

With Gilligan stating that his priority is to hire a new CEO [Chris Jack, 17 September] – after months of the vital role sitting vacant – any great sea-change of ownership or strategy still looks a long way away.

Light Blues supporters will hope an upturn in form on the pitch will help to mask the club’s failings off it, but in recent months the two have seemingly become all the more intertwined.

In other Rangers news, one journalist has set out the sheer size of the financial gap between the two Old Firm clubs at the moment.
