McGowan: John Bennett to make things right at Rangers after 'Brainless politics'

Stephen McGowan believes John Bennett must use his time wisely as Rangers executive chairman, making changes after “brainless politics” at Ibrox.

Bennett has taken over the role from Saudi Arabian-bound James Bisgrove, who has left his post as CEO after five years at the club ahead of the summer transfer window.

McGowan states that the Gers must win the hearts and minds back, having “alienated” the clubs in Scotland needed to support them in votes while fixing several aspects at Ibrox.

Writing for The Scottish Daily Mail on Saturday (8 June, page 116), he said: “For too long, Rangers spent their time fighting the world.

“When they should have been winning hearts and minds, they alienated the very clubs they needed to back them in a vote. It was brainless politics.

“Bennett will see to put a few things right during his time in charge. The club’s medical department needs fixing and there’s yet another squad rebuild to oversee hand-in-hand with Philippe Clement and head of recruitment Nils Koppen.

“Nothing matters more than developing a player-trading model capable of giving Celtic a run for their money on the pitch.”

The summer transfer is well underway at Ibrox despite not officially opening yet, and this period will be extremely important for the Gers after missing out on the Scottish Premiership title this season.

While the club have already missed out on signing Levski Sofia’s Jose Cordoba, they can also boast the re-signing of Oscar Cortes from Lens on a one-year loan deal with an obligation to buy.

Of course, there are bound to be several more changes, with the club’s retained players already announced and the likes of James Tavernier and Connor Goldson linked with exits this summer.

The transfer window will be a short-term project, obviously, with Clement hoping to bring in a selection of players to fit his philosophy, and winning other clubs back in Scotland will be a long-term aim.

This could be important if any other problems arise with the SPFL and Rangers need the backing of fellow clubs in the Scottish divisions to support their arguments.

In other Rangers news, a Premier League midfielder with “great quality” is now up for grabs this summer amid a recent development with a move to Ibrox on the cards.
