Micah Richards shares new Aberdeen & Rangers verdict, Gary Lineker instantly agrees

Micah Richards and Gary Lineker are keen to see Aberdeen challenge Celtic and Rangers for the Scottish Premiership title.

The Old Firm rivals have dominated the league for decades, with Aberdeen the last team other than the two to win a title in 1985.

Currently second in the Scottish Premiership table, joint on points with Celtic, the Dons have taken all 15 points from their opening five matches and have thrown their hat in the ring.

Speaking via The Rest Is Football podcast on Wednesday (25 September), Richards said: “Once you win enough games, you get that confidence. It’s a bit like Bayer Leverkusen last season, who just went on a run.

“Good luck to them because it would be nice if they could shake it up a little bit in Scotland. We’re always talking Rangers and Celtic so it would be nice for Aberdeen.”

Lineker instantly agreed, saying: “It would be refreshing. The only thing is that I can’t remember Aberdeen ever producing a great manager before,” with Richards and Alan Shearer beginning to chuckle.

Aberdeen to challenge Rangers & Celtic for Scottish Premiership title?

Much to the dismay of Rangers fans, Celtic are once again the team to beat, having kicked off the new campaign with five wins and zero goals conceded.

One of Philippe Clement’s main aims this season should be to challenge the Hoops for silverware in domestic competitions, and while this is possible in the cups, the Scottish Premiership is a different animal.

The Gers winning the league would make a huge statement, though Aberdeen currently have every chance of pipping both sides of the Old Firm derby to the title, however unlikely.

The Dons are yet to play either this season and with league fixtures against both within 11 days of each other in October, they could really throw the cat amongst the pigeons.

While an Aberdeen fairytale would make the league a far more exciting watch for outsider football fans, the Gers and Clement will not be so keen for this to happen, especially after missing out last term.
