Michael Gannon: Rangers AGM to be gritty drama as new development to be addressed

Michael Gannon believes Rangers AGM is set to be full of “gritty drama” after what’s gone down at the club this season especially since the promotion of Nils Koppen is also set to be addressed.

Koppen was recently promoted to technical director of the Ibrox outfit as the Gers look to try and rebuild their backroom hierarchy.

Writing for the print edition of the Sunday Mail [page 60, 24 November], Gannon shared his thoughts on what the AGM has in store for fans.

“Rangers fans peering in on the updates could point and laugh at some of the wacky parts [of Celtic’s AGM],” he wrote.

“But sensible Gers punters sat this one out – because they know their AGM is coming up. “That one could be more of a gritty drama than slapstick comedy, at least it should be.

“Unlike some of the bizarre nonsense in the Kerrydale Suite the other day, there are some real questions that need to be asked.

“Whether the shareholders and fans will get the answers is another thing though.” Later in the article, Gannon touched on Koppen’s promotion.

“Nils Koppen will have a new seat up there – and that’s another issue that needs addressed,” he added.

“The Belgian’s promotion to technical director is another slightly strange move – given there are no bums on the seats in the roles above him.”

Rangers need to explain their Nils Koppen decision

Much like their choice to extend Philippe Clement’s stay at Ibrox despite his poor start to the season, the Gers’ decision to promote Koppen needs to be explained.

The new technical director of the club had a poor summer window that’s ended up with the Gers sitting third in the Scottish Premiership, 11 points adrift of league leaders, Celtic.

The Belgian hasn’t had a role similar in his career with his previous stints at PSV and Genk mainly being based around scouting and recruitment.

It feels like a fairly premature promotion and with the amount of changes that the club still needs to make to their team in order to become competitive once again Koppen’s promotion is hard for fans to justify.

Unless Koppen shows that he can handle the pressure then the Gers could find themselves in yet another pickle and owing more money to a staff member due to the compensation that would be owed to relieve him of his duties.
