View: Rangers board lost millions for Clement, now he could pay with his job

There is asbolutely no beating around the bush. Rangers are in a state of shambles.

On the pitch, results and performances are nowhere near good enough. Off the pitch, it feels absolutely rudderless amid a swathe of departures and a lack of inaction in bringing new faces in.

Philippe Clement cannot be completely blameless for the sad state of affairs at Ibrox. Frankly, there is no way the Gers should be 11 points back of Celtic before we’re even into December.

But to suggest that the current crisis they find themselves in is solely down to the Belgian technician would be wildly unfair.

Indeed, the current state of Rangers is down to a series of mismanagement and poor decisions when it comes to both buying and selling.

In fact, you can make an extremely solid argument that the poor decisions at boardroom level have cost Clement millions in the transfer market.

It is no secret that Clement was told in the summer that funds would need to be raised for reinforcements through player sales but it is historic inaction in that regard that means Rangers are in such a poor position.

Even this summer, the likes of John Lundstram and Borna Barisic were released when previously there would have been opportunities to raise some money.

But go back further and the fact that the likes of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos were allowed to leave for free (BBC Sport) when at one point their stock would have brought in eight-figure fees is baffling.

Even now, you look at someone like James Tavernier, a fine servant to the club but someone who finds his current position the subject of intense debate, and the chance they’ve had previously to make big money on his services.

What really rankles is that Rangers’ biggest rivals are so adept at finding talent to sell for big money, Celtic have a model that is really working.

Some of Rangers’ recruitment this summer obviously hinted at trying to follow a similar long-term path but their shoddy work in that department previously is really coming home to roost now.

The truth is that poor boardroom mismanagement could ultimately cost Clement his job. It is a sorry state of affairs.
