Steven Naismith couldn’t believe Danilo missed an “unbelievable chance” for Rangers in the 1-1 draw against Dundee United.
The Gers lost further ground in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday [23 November], relying on a 66th-minute equaliser from Vaclav Cerny to cancel out Sam Dalby’s opener at Ibrox.
However, Naismith believes Rangers should have secured a vital three points for Philippe Clement when critiquing the match live on BBC Sportscene [23 November, 33:59] as Danilo squandered a golden chance in the second half.
He said: “That’s an unbelievable chance, [it] needs to be a goal.”
Rangers and Philippe Clement fail to win again v Dundee United
Cerny and Danilo played a clever one-two around the Dundee United defence before the Czech forward pulled it back to his teammate with the goal gaping – Danilo scuppered his shot wide of the goal.
Had the Brazilian converted his opportunity, it would be a completely different story at Rangers, but the Glaswegian outfit now find themselves 11 points adrift of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership – if the domestic campaign was not already over, it is now.
Aberdeen have emerged as the “real challengers” to Celtic this season, and while Jimmy Thelin also tasted defeat in a 2-1 loss against St Mirren, the three points separating the sides is certainly a more manageable gap to overcome.
Rangers supporters will be counting down the days before Philippe Clement is inevitably shown the door at Ibrox; with all hope lost in the SPFL, slim chances remain of success in the Europa League, albeit qualification to the knockout stages is a real possibility.
Indeed, it was a grim afternoon for all those involved with the Gers, as the conditions of Storm Bert led to miserable conditions at Ibrox and forced the delay to kick-off by 45 minutes.
However, Rangers supporters can certainly expect change in Glasgow with the impending announcement of Patrick Stewart as chief executive officer [Rangers Review] alongside Michael Offord as club chairman in a new-look regime, which could result in the long-awaited and abrupt end of the Clement era.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are set to hire Patrick Stewart in a sensational Ibrox double swoop.
