Michael Stewart is unsure if the current Rangers squad have the character or intensity to match Celtic and Aberdeen this season.
Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club (11 November), Stewart said that while the Light Blues can continue the momentum by winning games, they have to show more if they’re to make a real impact.
Philippe Clement’s side struggled to a narrow 1-0 win over Hearts on 10 November with an unconvincing performance, and remain nine points behind in the Premiership title race.
Stewart said: “The biggest and most important thing is Rangers win games and build momentum like that. I’m still questioning the character of a lot of the team – are they intense enough?
“If you can pick up enough results, you can maybe carry them along with you. My concern for Rangers is have they got enough leaders?
“I look at the way Rangers play, and they don’t play with the same intensity that Celtic, or even Aberdeen do.”
Rangers players need to stand up and be counted at Ibrox
A 1-0 win over Hearts – in which the Gers’ performance fell off a cliff after opening the scoring on six minutes – won’t have convinced many that Clement’s side are closing the gap on Celtic and Aberdeen.
That gap was 12 points at the start of play on Sunday and is back down to nine, but that’s still a sizeable distance away from where the club need to be given the level of control the Belgian has been allowed.
James Tavernier – who has been criticised from all angles this season – was one player who impressed early on against Hearts, but those old flaws reared their heads again as the game dragged on.
The character of players like Cyriel Dessers, who has now scored in his last three games, is rarely questioned, but his ability to take the Bears to that next level remains under a significant cloud.
It remains to be seen just how Clement can galvanise his new-look squad to make up for their poor start, and with this being the ‘real’ Rangers according to the Belgian, fans have more questions than answers regarding where their season is going.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement is digging himself a hole with his recent comments about what Bears fans did at Ibrox.
