Newcastle United are in transfer deadline day talks to sign Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga.

Eddie Howe’s side are still on the hunt for reinforcements in attack and have now turned their attention to former Manchester United star Elanga.

Newcastle are prepared to pay £35million to bring the winger to St James’ Park, Sky Sports News report.

But Forest have ‘no desire’ to sell the 22-year-old and have ’roundly rejected’ that opening offer.

Newcastle have spent the last month of the summer transfer window pursuing a deal for Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi. The south east London side rejected four bids for the England international, the most recent worth up to £65million.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner confirmed the centre-half would not be leaving on Friday morning, leaving Newcastle with plenty of cash to spend in the final hours of the summer transfer window.

Newcastle boss Howe did not rule out the possibility of more signings when he spoke to the media this morning but admitted it would be ‘difficult’ getting deals over the line.

‘There is still work going on to try and see what we can do in the last few hours of this window. Whilst there is time there is hope.

‘With such a short time left, it is looking difficult. This transfer window continues to be difficult for us.

‘It is a difficult situation with PSR and attracting the right players that we think can make a difference.

‘If we can’t do that (attract the right players), then doing nothing is perhaps the best option, as frustrating as that is.

There is a feeling that we have a good squad but a feeling that there are a few areas that we felt we needed to strengthen. We have a good squad.’

He continued: ‘We like all the players that we have in our squad.

‘However, there is a feeling of course, that there are a few areas of the squad that we felt we needed to strengthen.

‘I think we carry those emotions depending on what happens in these final hours [of the transfer window].’
