Kenneth Vargas missing a “guilt-edge opportunity” to equalise for Hearts against Rangers has been slammed by Michael Stewart.
Speaking on commentary for Premier Sports (10 November, 6:07pm), Stewart said that Vargas’ miss in the opening seconds of the second half was a clear example of the Costa Rican’s lack of composure.
The Gers went 1-0 up early in the first half at Ibrox through Cyriel Dessers and clung on to seal the points, with Vargas’ hitting of the woodwork proving to be a sign of things to come at the back.
Stewart said: “I’ve said it a million times – Kenneth Vargas’ final end product is just not good enough.
“That is a guilt-edge opportunity, of which you’re not going to get too many of at Ibrox.
“1-0 down, right at the start of the second half – what a way to open the second half, instead he hits the post and the chance is gone.
“It’s an incredible opportunity there for Vargas, it’s on a plate.”
Rangers get lucky after early let-off against Hearts
Taking a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the contest at Ibrox, Philippe Clement’s side failed to impress for much of the remaining 82, particularly in a second half dreadfully low on quality at both ends.
Hearts splitting the hosts straight down the middle with the first move of the second half was certainly a warning sign for the Gers, who sat off to such an extent that the visitors looked more likely to score next.
Neraysho Kasanwirjo hitting the crossbar in second-half injury time was arguably as good as it got for the hosts other than Dessers’ early opener, and that didn’t do much to calm an uneasy Ibrox crowd.
Had Vargas’ strike hit the post and gone in to bring the scores back on level terms, who knows how Clement’s side would have reacted, but their overall performance gave very little in terms of good signs.
Getting three points in the bag is the ultimate goal of any Premiership match, but the Gers need to produce more if they’re to mount a serious challenge for this season’s title.
In other Rangers news, one Light Blues star repaid Clement’s faith with his first-half performance against the Jam Tarts at Ibrox.
