'Obvious One' - Tam McManus moots Philippe Clement replacement amid 'Massive' Rangers claim

Tam McManus remains convinced that Derek McInnes is the “obvious” candidate to replace Philippe Clement and take on the “massive job” at Rangers.

Clement saw his Gers side fall 11 points adrift of Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic after playing out a dismal 1-1 draw with Dundee United at Ibrox on Saturday (23 November).

Consequently, they remain third in the table – eight points back of Aberdeen – and pundit McManus, speaking on the PLZ Soccer Show (25 November), thinks any boss coming in at Ibrox will recognise the current gap to Old Firm rivals Celtic.

“It’s a massive job, it really is especially when you look at where Celtic are at the minute,” he said.

“I know a lot of Rangers fans have already written this season off. They’re miles behind Celtic, they’re not going to catch them anyway. But Celtic and Rangers are always going to compare themselves to the other team.

“And if a Rangers manager comes in and he looks at how far Celtic are ahead in terms of the finances and budget, strength of squad, depth, recruitment – everything. It’s a real big job for a Rangers manager.

“But I think they need to get somebody in who knows Scottish football. I’ve said it before, Derek McInnes is the obvious one for me, I know he’s knocked it back before, I don’t think he would knock it back again if they come back in for him.

“But I think somebody of that ilk is what Rangers are needing. They need to start being the best of the rest again and take it from there because they’re not going to get anywhere near Celtic anytime soon to be honest.”

Rangers need to move on from Philippe Clement

It would be harsh in the extreme to lay all the blame for Rangers’ current woes squarely at the feet of Clement, and it would be wrong to do so too.

What is happening right now is the culmination of years of mismanagement, poor decisions in terms of buying and selling in the transfer market, and the constant changing of managers.

But, on the flip side, there is no doubt that Clement is part of the problem. Performances and results have not been consistently anywhere near good enough for a long time and, with changes upstairs with the arrival of Patrick Stewart, it feels like the right time to have a complete overhaul and start again.

McInnes is certainly a manager with the credentials to give it a crack and he is someone who knows Scottish football and deserves a crack at the top job at Ibrox. A change should be made sooner rather than later.
