Steven Alzate could be an option for Rangers to sign this summer after he was released by Brighton as long as he is capable of playing regularly, says Derek Ferguson.

The Colombian international was confirmed by the Seagulls as leaving last month after seven years, having been linked to an Ibrox move in the winter [AS, 8 January].

With the Light Blues having done a deal last season to bring in Abdallah Sima on loan Ferguson is confident the club will know all they need to about Alzate, 25, and with a need for “good players” in midfield this summer has backed them to snap up the free agent if they hold an interest.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “Of course, we need good players. Obviously there’s a relationship there between Rangers and Brighton, with us getting Sima.

“So again, they would have done their homework, obviously there’s something to like about the boy.

“But we need players who can play 30 or 40 games. You look at that midfield area through the course of the season, the amount of injuries the players were picking up.

“You don’t want to be injured, of course you don’t, but we cannae bring in players that are going to be susceptible to picking up injuries, we need guys that are proven, that can play a certain amount of games and are robust for our league, because our league is robust.

“There’s no doubt about it. You don’t get time on the ball, there’s a real physicality about it, so we need to bring in these players that can handle that.

“And if that’s the guy that they think can do it then all the better. I don’t know too much about the boy. We’re linked with all these players but the other side is there’s a lot you have deal with when you come to Rangers.

“It’s not just about being a good football player. You’ve got to handle Glasgow, it’s 24/7 up here, the pressure, the expectation.

“And of course with Celtic dominating at the moment the pressure is heightened ever so much.”

Rangers have knowledge of Brighton ace after Abdallah Sima deal

Philippe Clement has already seen two senior central midfielders depart in the form of John Lundstram and Ryan Jack, and although the smart signing of former Aberdeen youngster Connor Barron has partially addressed that there is still more work to do.

A move for Norwich City’s Scotland international Kenny McLean is seemingly in the balance after looking ready to go through in the past week [Rangers Review, 1 July], so if there is interest in Alzate the Light Blues could be assessed.

But if they weren’t interested in taking him off Brighton’s hands in January then perhaps they won’t be now, unlike Sima who they surely would be at a time when a deal appears like it might be possible.

In other Rangers news, a controversial Light Blues ace is now expected to leave the club during the transfer window.
