Report shares why Newcastle move for Everton ace Calvert-Lewin collapsed

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s transfer to Newcastle United broke down due to a “mess” at St. James’ Park, according to The Telegraph.

The newspaper reported on their website (4 July) that the Toffees striker’s move fell through after Newcastle were unable to offload Callum Wilson beforehand, scuppering both Calvert-Lewin’s transfer and that of Magpies winger Yankuba Minteh heading the other way [Gazzetta dello Sport, 27 June].

Had Wilson been sold prior to the end of June, Newcastle would have actively pursued a deal for Calvert-Lewin, but they pulled the plug on the transfer to avoid having three specialist strikers on the books.

A swap deal would reportedly have seen Calvert-Lewin head to Newcastle and Minteh arrive at Goodison Park, but the North East club have since sold the Gambian winger to Brighton for £33million instead.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin could still make Everton transfer after ‘mess’

The frantic PSR situation at Newcastle appears to have spooked the Magpies away from pursuing a move for Calvert-Lewin, but interest could resurface with plenty of the transfer window left to run [Liverpool Echo, 1 July].

The Toffees striker is in a precarious situation regardless of outside interest, having entered the last 12 months of his current contract and being yet to sign an extension of any kind [TEAMtalk, 23 May].

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still yet to sign a new contract at Everton with 12 months left on his deal.

Not only will that see rivals circle for a cut-price deal, it could also hamper the Blues’ own incomings in the forwards department, not knowing whether they’ll need a brand-new number nine this summer.

Newcastle selling 32-year-old Wilson and bringing in a player five years younger for a discounted price will firmly appeal to the Magpies, and Calvert-Lewin’s contract scenario leaves the power in his hands [TEAMtalk, 22 June].

Sean Dyche won’t want to lose his go-to option in attack, but with Beto and Youssef Chermiti waiting in the wings and Iliman Ndiaye arriving, the signs point to Calvert-Lewin being the subject of much more transfer speculation in the coming weeks.

In other Everton news, the Toffees could command a fee of up to £100million for defender Jarrad Branthwaite next summer.
