Paul Merson has predicted a “Spursy” result when Tottenham take on Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday (27 October).
Ange Postecoglou will travel to Selhurst Park fresh from a convincing 4-1 win last time out in the league against West Ham United last weekend, in which the club has since been charged by the FA for failing to ensure the players “didn’t behave in an improper and/or provocative and/or violent way”.
Sky Sports pundit Merson feels the result will depend on which Tottenham side turns up but, as part of his Sportskeeda Premier League predictions [24 October], he tipped the game to finish in an entertaining 2-2 draw.
“I have a feeling Crystal Palace will find it difficult against Tottenham this weekend. But I’m fully aware that it also depends on what Tottenham turn up for the game,” he said.
“I don’t mean it horribly, but sometimes they get a bit ‘Spursy’. That’s the problem with them at the moment.
“I watched Spurs’ first half against Brighton and I thought ‘wow, they could actually give teams a real go in the race for top four’.
“We all know what happened after that. On their day, Tottenham are a really good team. They should show that more often on a consistent basis.”
Tottenham must find consistency in the Premier League
Postecoglou will undoubtedly be pleased with his side’s performance against West Ham – it was the perfect response to the shocking 3-2 defeat to Brighton before the international break.
Spurs were on the back foot for most of the first half following Mohammed Kudus’ opener, but his meltdown which led to his sending-off in the dying embers of the match was in no part due to the miraculous second-half turnaround.
The Lilywhites scored three goals in eight second-half minutes to put the tie to bed after Dejan Kulusevski produced a spectacular equaliser in the first half. Indeed, the Swede has played himself into “untouchable” form in the Premier League as of late.
However, the victory was not without its concerns for Postecoglou as his decision to remove James Maddison at half-time raised question marks on where the 27-year-old will fit into the side this year.
While Crystal Palace are one of four sides yet to record a victory in the league after eight matches, the barren record works against Spurs’ favour as it is only a matter of time before Oliver Glasner engineers his side’s first win this season.
Tottenham have struggled for consistency thus far, but the result against West Ham could be the turning point for Postecoglou. His side are only four points away from Aston Villa in fourth place; anything less than three points at Selhurst Park would be a failure.
