Player agrees Premier League move as Rangers wanted to sign him - report

Rangers have registered an interest in signing Marseille forward Iliman Ndiaye this summer, according to HITC.

The online source reported [25 June] that Fulham and Leicester City also keeping tabs on the 24-year-old, with new boss Roberto De Zerbi green-lighting an exit.

It is understood that Ndiaye is open to a move back to England, as per RMC journalist Fabrice Hawkins, and Premier League side Everton look to have won the race this summer.

Fabrizio Romano issued his famous “here we go” phrase via Twitter on Tuesday 25 June, with the player set to join the Merseyside club on a five-year contract in a deal worth £16.9million.

Rangers set to miss out on Iliman Ndiaye transfer with Everton close to deal

Given the fee being mooted for the signing of Ndiaye, it would have been extremely unlikely to see him arrive at Ibrox this summer on anything other than a loan deal.

However, it seems that Marseille were looking for a more permanent solution and that is exactly what they have got in the Toffees.

Ndiaye has seemingly struggled since leaving Sheffield United last summer, where he scored 22 goals in 88 appearances, but has been performing in Ligue 1 and the Europa League.

That kind of experience would have been sought-after by Philippe Clement, but the eye-watering price tag would have cut Rangers out of any deal straight away.

While the manager and Nils Koppen are attempting to rebuild the squad this summer, the pair are still working on a shoestring budget, meaning the club need to be very smart with their additions.

With Leon Balogun signing a contract extension, Oscar Cortes re-joining on a season-long loan, and Clinton Nsiala and Connor Barron joining as free agents, the plan is being executed perfectly so far.

The only real possibility of signing Ndiaye on a permanent transfer was if the club were able to raise enough funds through player sales, which does not look to be a viable option anytime soon.

In other Rangers news, Borna Barisic has sent a message to Gers fans after finding a new club this summer.
