Player that Everton sold this summer could already be on January exit list at new club - report

Ben Godfrey could already be on Atalanta’s transfer list ahead of the January window after leaving Everton this summer, according to Tutto Atalanta.

The Italian source reported on Monday (2 September) that the defender looks to be on the club’s list of potential departures ahead of the next transfer window, having signed for £10million [BBC Sport].

Godfrey’s first appearance for the Serie A side came as a substitute against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup, entering the pitch as a midfielder, which did not produce the desired results.

He also came on as a substitute in a 4-0 win over Lecce, playing 22 minutes on Monday 19 August, but has not made appearances in defeats to Torino and Inter Milan.

Ben Godfrey struggles after leaving Everton this summer

For any players who are pushing to leave Goodison Park in the future, such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Jarrad Branthwaite, Godfrey’s situation proves that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

He made 93 appearances in all competitions after arriving from Norwich City in 2020.

While the centre-back had slipped down the pecking order under Sean Dyche, making a total of 23 Premier League starts over his last two seasons at the club, it seems to have been a better situation.

Of course, players deserve the right to explore their options and move on, and there will be no tears shed at Goodison Park after the Toffees earned £10million back on a rarely-seen player.

Many of his appearances in his final season on Merseyside came in the right-back position, where Dyche continues to have problems after not addressing it during the summer transfer window.

Godfrey made his decision during the summer, joining Atalanta in Italy, and there is no longer a way back with the Toffees for the central defender.

In other Everton news, Ally McCoist mooted a “major problem” for Sean Dyche following defeat to Bournemouth.
