Connor Goldson believes recruitment is to blame for the downfall at Rangers after a poor start to the season.
The Gers have come under fire this campaign for their form as they currently sit nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.
Philippe Clement has demanded patience from supporters after the Light Blues made 11 signings during the summer window.
This hasn’t washed well with fans, and former Rangers defender Goldson – who left for Aris Limassol earlier this year – has suggested recruitment and transfers are the main issue with what is now going wrong at Ibrox.
In an interview with the Daily Record on 17 November, he said: “I watch a lot of games and it’s been a tough start. But they need to quickly get going. It’s tough for me to talk about Rangers now because there are still so many people at the club I respect. But the fans aren’t happy with what’s going on and that’s understandable.
“Are Rangers in transition? Yes. But should they be nine points behind after 11 games? No. When they had the chance to build in 2021 they didn’t. And we’re seeing the repercussions. It’s not just finance, it’s everything.
“Rangers have still spent a lot of money over a number of years. So it comes down to recruitment, finding the right players and selling when the time’s right. Unfortunately, they have allowed too many players to leave on free transfers without getting money for their main assets.”
Connor Goldson reveals what is wrong at Rangers
The 31-year-old departed Ibrox over the summer for Aris Limassol of Cyprus after six years and over 300 appearances with the club.
This came as a surprise somewhat after the impact he had on the Gers, playing nearly every game since joining the club and playing a key role in reaching a Europa League final.
It was made clear over the summer transfer window that Clement did not want him as part of his squad, which saw him left out of a pre-season friendly against Birmingham City.
Robin Propper came in from Twente while John Souttar has stepped up into the role to soften the blow of losing the Englishman.
With that being said, the ex-Brighton man has made it clear that there are issues that are impacting the club that the players are aware of.
This may be having more of an effect on the current crop of players than fans realise, especially when someone like James Tavernier has been struggling for form.
And in fairness, no Rangers fan can really disagree with what Goldson has said. The recruitment team, more so than Clement, really are to blame for this mess.
