Postecoglou exit risk emerges at Tottenham in shock turn of events

Ange Postecoglou might leave Tottenham to become the next England manager, according to The Telegraph.

The paper reported via its online edition on Wednesday (July 17) that the Football Association has been tracking Postecoglou for years, with FA technical director John McDermott being a long-time admirer of the Australian.

McDermott is putting together a shortlist to replace Gareth Southgate, with Postecoglou expected to be a top candidate.

As far as any announcements are concerned, the FA hasn’t ruled out an interim manager for the upcoming Nations League ties, but they would prefer a permanent appointment.

Could Postecoglou really leave Tottenham for England?

Postecoglou is now among the names considered by the FA for the England manager role, but could he really leave Spurs?

With Gareth Southgate stepping down after England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, the FA is on the hunt for a new leader.

Reports suggest Postecoglou, who has three years left on his Spurs contract, is a top target.

And FA technical director McDermott has admired Postecoglou’s career from Australia to Scotland and now in the Premier League.

However, despite the interest, Postecoglou has previously downplayed such links. When asked about the England job last year, he brushed it off, emphasising his focus on Tottenham [The Mirror, July 17]. His stance was similar when linked to Liverpool, highlighting the ongoing work needed at Spurs.

The FA wants a manager who can continue Southgate’s positive team culture, and Postecoglou fits the bill.

However, other big names like Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have also been mentioned, making the FA’s final decision uncertain.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs could sign Lille star Jonathan David as an Ivan Toney transfer alternative.
