Pundit shares what he heard from Rangers 'dressing room' about Clement at Ibrox

Marvin Bartley has revealed players in the Rangers dressing room believed they would “outlast” Philippe Clement before his contract extension.

The Light Blues surprised pundits and supporters alike by handing the Belgian a new deal on the eve of the new Scottish Premiership campaign to extend his tenure at Ibrox.

While some have suggested that the decision was a mistake, Clyde 1 pundit Bartley has suggested it was the right call because of the divisions in the Gers’ first team dressing room at this moment in time.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (23 October, 18:25) he said: “Obviously he was given a new contract and I’ll be honest I was in agreement with it.

“From what I was hearing coming out of the dressing room, there were one or two players who had the mentality of I’ll outlast the manager. I’ve been in dressing rooms before and it is very difficult for a manager to turn around if players think that’s a possibility.

“But they need to do more.”

While so much of the blame has been put on Clement over the last few weeks at Ibrox, it does feel as though this current crop of players in the first-team dressing room is far from perfect.

The togetherness that the Light Blues demonstrated under Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst is long gone and it now appears as though this is a team of individuals playing for themselves rather than one another.

Although it is common in football that players don’t get along with certain managers, it is bizarre to hear that there are members of Clement’s side actively discussing the fact they will outlast the current manager at Ibrox.

Hopefully, the majority of players who were suggesting that this summer were moved on. You have to wonder if that had anything to do with why players such as Connor Goldson or even Todd Cantwell departed Glasgow.

Whoever it was, things really aren’t looking good for Clement right now.
