Pundit speculates Rangers man could return to Ibrox 'stronger and better' after Clement call

James Tavernier could return to Rangers “stronger and better” after a recent Philippe Clement decision, according to Barry Ferguson.

The Gers skipper was left out of the starting XI for the Light Blues’ Europa League draw with Olympiacos on Thursday (7 November) with Dujon Sterling preferred to start at right-back.

Although some have suggested Clement’s call to drop the Englishman spells the end of his time at Ibrox, Daily Record pundit Ferguson believes it could be what the right-back needs to get his career back up and running.

Writing for the Daily Record on Saturday (9 November) he said: “As you get older, your body’s not the same, everybody knows that.

“That might just be a case that Tav’s maybe feeling it a wee touch just now.

“I don’t know but maybe giving him that wee bit of respite and sitting on the bench, watching his teammates, you might see Tav come back stronger and better again.”

What has happened to Rangers skipper James Tavernier at Ibrox?

Regardless of what happens to Tavernier between now and the end of the season, it feels as if Clement has made the right call to take the skipper out of the firing line ahead of the international break.

It is clear the Englishman has been nowhere near his best so far this term and if all the pundits and supporters can recognise that, he will be feeling it himself.

A spell out of the starting XI watching the likes of Sterling and Neraysho Kasanwirjo impress in his position may be enough for him to build up that hunger and desire to get back out there that he needs to reach his best level.

Hopefully, Sterling will be fit enough to start again against Hearts on Sunday (10 November) and Tavernier will only be called upon if he isn’t able to complete the entire 90 minutes.

Then after the international break, Clement and his coaching team can reassess the situation and make a more long-term judgement on the captain’s future.
