Tottenham attacker Dane Scarlett may have played his last game for the club after new transfer developments, according to Alan Hutton.

The 20-year-old spent pre-season with Ange Postecoglou’s squad but has left North London on loan ahead of the new Premier League campaign, joining Oxford United temporarily in the Championship.

Scarlett has now enjoyed three loan spells away from the Lilywhites since he made his Premier League debut in the 2020/21 campaign, but he is yet to force his way into Postecoglou’s first-team on a regular basis.

Although the striker has a contract with Spurs until the summer of 2027, Hutton believes this loan exit and the signing of Dominic Solanke means that he is now in the “shop window”.

“Possibly, you never like to say it with young players,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“But he has had opportunities, he’s gone out on loan, he’s had a number of loans now and he’s going back out on loan this season.

“He was there for pre-season so the manager would have had a good look at him and then made his decision.

“You’re out in the shop window as a young guy. You go out on loan and you want to be scoring goals, hitting the headlines and having people watching you and looking at you for your future development, wherever it may be.

“You just feel that at Tottenham at this moment in time, it’s not going to quite click. They’ve spent a lot of money on Solanke, you just feel that with another loan he could be moved on.”

Will Dane Scarlett exit Tottenham after Oxford United transfer?

Scarlett was always unlikely to be a regular fixture of Postecoglou’s squad this season, but having spent the second half of last term around the first team, some had expected him to remain involved this year.

Players have managed to break through at Spurs after multiple loan spells. The forward only needs to look as far as Harry Kane to realise that his career in North London isn’t over before it has even begun.

But other players such as Troy Parrott have had multiple temporary moves away and never quite managed to do enough to force their way into the fold.

Ultimately, it is now down to Scarlett to show Postecoglou that he has what it takes over the next few months in the Championship. This could be the season it finally clicks for the 20-year-old.
