Mark Pembridge believes Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be disappointed with himself after failing to score as Everton beat Ipswich Town 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, 19 October.
Calvert-Lewin missed two big chances to get on the scoresheet at Portman Road, but Pembridge reckons no one will need to remind him about that.
Speaking on BBC Radio Merseyside, the former Toffees midfielder pointed out that the best strikers are known for converting the chances they get.
“The chances and the nature of the chances that he got especially the first one, he was clean on in goal, he had lots of time to be composed and slide in the back of the corner, which he’ll be disappointed more than anybody else”, Pembridge said.
“Nobody will need to tell him that he should’ve scored, he knows himself he should’ve scored.
“But again, that’s what top strikers do, you get one chance, you score a goal and that’s the hardest thing in football – to put the ball in the back of the net, that’s why strikers cost you the most money.
“So, it’s the hardest thing to do and he’s getting chances but he’s also working hard off the ball and in between.
“He just needs to now convert a couple of them chances that he’s getting into goals to get to double figures or above double figures for the season.”
Pembridge also admitted that Calvert-Lewin struggles when he has enough time to take a shot and stressed the need for the Englishman to improve his finishing.
“He is one of them players that gets in, has half a second to shoot and he shoots and he scores”, he added.
“So, yeah, maybe he doesn’t score as many goals when he has to think about it and he composes himself.
“But, that’s what you need to become a top striker, you get one chance and you score a goal and you end up winning 1-0.
“So, that side of his game probably needs to improve.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs to contribute more goals to Everton
The criticism aimed at Calvert-Lewin is valid as he has only scored twice for Everton in eight league games this season.
He has now gone four games without finding the back of the net, with his last goal contribution coming in the Toffees’ 3-2 loss to Aston Villa on 14 September.
A four-game goal drought is not a good sign for a centre-forward of Calvert-Lewin’s calibre especially if he is failing to convert the chances he is getting.
With just two goals to his name, the 27-year-old is currently underperforming his xG (3.34), according to FotMob.
It is worth noting that Calvert-Lewin ended the last season on a high, netting four goals and providing one assist in his last seven league games.
Therefore, it could only be a matter of time before the striker starts scoring consistently again.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen where Calvert-Lewin’s long-term future lies as he is attracting interest from Juventus with his contract set to expire in June.
In other Everton news, Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna was left infuriated by an “inexplicable” incident in the loss against the Toffees.
