Derek McInnes will be “in the frame” to replace Philippe Clement at Ibrox if Rangers decide to sack the Belgian, according to Graham Dorrans.
The Light Blues boss has come under pressure following the Gers’ 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October) which saw Clement’s side throw away a chance to close the gap to Celtic at the top of the table.
While Clement is believed to have the backing of the Ibrox board [Chris Jack, 22 October], Go Radio pundit Dorrans believes McInnes would be one of the names considered if a change was made in the dugout.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (23 October, 29:45) he said: “He’ll definitely be in the frame if Rangers choose to make that decision and make a change.
“He’s been a name, as you mention, that has been linked before. Did an absolutely fantastic job at Aberdeen and he’s doing the same down at Kilmarnock.
“He’s a manager who sets his team up well, hard to play against and he knows what it takes to win at Rangers. If he were to get the job, he’d go in there and rile people up, he’ll let the players know what it means to go out there and play for Rangers.
“If they do make the decision to change the manager, he’ll be in there with a shout.”
Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement at Ibrox after recent developments?
It seems unlikely that the Gers will be rushing into any major changes at Ibrox at this stage, but if they do decide to sack Clement, McInnes simply has to be in the running to take over the reins in Glasgow.
The former Gers player knows what it takes to win in Glasgow. He played at Ibrox as a player and should have what it takes to rile up the layers and get the best out of them as they look to close the gap to Celtic at the top of the table.
While some will question whether or not he has the pedigree to take over an Old Firm side, his record in Scotland shows that he is up to the task.
Rangers would be naive to not at least consider bringing him back to Ibrox.
Hopefully, Clement will manage to turn the tide and save his job with some improved performances on the pitch. Ultimately, neither fans nor pundits want the club to get into the habit of sacking managers each and every season.
