Pundit View: 'No future' for Tottenham senior player as temp deal finalised

Bryan Gil has no future at Tottenham after sealing a loan move to Girona ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, Paul Robinson has said.

This comes after the news that Spurs were readying a contract extension for the 23-year-old, as per Fabrizio Romano, with a £12.6million release clause to be included before heading to La Liga.

Gil has made just 43 appearances for the Lilywhites since arriving at the club in the summer of 2021, having been sent out to Valencia, Sevilla, and now Girona in that time.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “I don’t think he’s got a future at Tottenham. He hasn’t been good enough – he’s too lightweight for the Premier League and it’s too quick and physical.

“I think he’s a very talented player, with great technical ability, and he’s shown that in fits and starts. But with the amount of time he’s spent out on loan, there’s no future for him. He’ll find it much easier in La Liga where the pace of the game is much slower.

“It seems to be a move for Tottenham that hasn’t worked. He’s not part of the manager’s plans. He’s a senior player who has been sent out on loan. If that happens, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that the manager doesn’t want you as part of his squad.”

Gil had shown plenty of promise in Spain as a youngster before sealing a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2021, but it is certainly not a transfer that has worked out for either party.

The 23-year-old has convinced more during his loan spells away from Spurs, even despite being reintroduced into Ange Postecoglou’s team last season.

He made just 12 appearances for the Lilywhites last term, with only two of them as Premier League starts, and they could be his final actions in a Tottenham shirt despite signing a new contract.
