England got a big win against Finland and Ian Wright has had his say on the performance of former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes.
Gomes was one of the star performers and showed his class to get England off and running as he played a stunning through-ball for Jack Grealish to open the scoring.
Gomes has been one of the big beneficiaries of Lee Carsley coming into the manager’s job and he has looked excellent in the few games he has played.
Of course, Gomes is a player who Man United fans keep a close eye on. The midfielder left them for nothing and has since starred in France, and now for England.
And assessing his performance v Finland tonight, Ian Wright admitted there could be more to come.
Ian Wright issues Angel Gomes verdict
Speaking on ITV after the win over Finland, Wright got onto the subject of former United man Gomes.
And speaking on his performance, Wright suggested he wants to see more of the midfielder against some even better teams.
“It would’ve been interesting to see Angel Gomes play against Greece. You can see how comfortable it was tonight against this level of opponent,” Wright said.
“Gomes is capable of creating something out of nothing. Hopefully he can play more games against better opposition so we can see what he’s really like.”
Man United missed a trick with Angel Gomes
While the Red Devils have brought through Kobbie Mainoo and have had other young players do well, they will be kicking themselves a bit over Gomes.
Yes, sometimes a player needs that fresh start to go on and do well.
But right now, it’s very much looking like United have missed a beat by not keeping hold of the talented midfielder.
Gomes, of course, will simply keep playing his football and improving. Indeed, Gomes admitted himself he’d left Old Trafford to better himself, and it looks like he’s done just that.
As Wright says here, there is definitely more to come.
