Report: Liverpool now interested in signing 'immaculate' £5m Champions League defender

Liverpool had a quiet summer window but with January just a few months away, they are being linked with a number of potential signings.

Arne Slot was only backed with the signing of Federico Chiesa in the summer as he maintained trust in the squad that Jurgen Klopp had left him.

Still, with Michael Edwards returning to the club and Richard Hughes also brought onboard, Liverpool fans will be expecting a bit more from the next two windows.

But with a number of first-team stars now getting on in their years and contracts not sorted, the Reds do look to be making plans for new faces.

And according to reports from Spain, the Reds are interested in signing a former Manchester United player.

Liverpool keen on Alvaro Carreras

According to Spanish outlet AS, Liverpool have been drawn to the Carreras after his performances in the Champions League with Benfica.

Carreras – who was known as Alvaro Fernandez while at Man United – has impressed since making his move to Portugal and has starred for Benfica at left-back.

Liverpool, of course, do have both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas as options as left-back.

However, with Carreras only being 21, there could be an opportunity for Liverpool to sign a player who can fill the slot for years to come.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are also watching Carreras.

Benfica only paid around £5m for the left-back but are expected to demand a big fee should they decide to sell.

Liverpool looking to the future

With the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah into their 30s and no closer to signing new contracts, Liverpool need to be looking to the future now.

But as well as those two players, Liverpool do have others who perhaps need replacing and Robertson is one of those players.

The Scot has been outstanding over the years for the Reds but there comes a time for all players to be challenged by a new signing.

Carreras, then, might be the man to do just that for Liverpool. Lauded as an ‘immaculate‘ young player while on loan at Preston, Carreras’ trajectory has been an upward one for some time.
