Lennon Miller moving to Rangers in January would be a statement of intent that the club must do all they can to make happen.
A bidding war is anticipated for the highly-rated Motherwell midfielder almost as soon as the January window opens, with both Old Firm clubs interested as well as some big-hitters south of the border [Daily Mail, 14 November].
However, the Gers have been tipped to be “blown out of the water” by Celtic in Chris Sutton’s view and to “struggle” in their approach by Mark Guidi, suggesting they have an outside chance of a deal.
There’s no doubt that the Light Blues are down on their luck at present, but with boardroom changes anticipated in the coming weeks [Chris Jack, 13 November], the landscape could be very different when January comes around.
Rangers have to make Lennon Miller transfer statement in January
With every passing week, the chances of 18-year-old Miller still being a Motherwell player by next February are looking more and more unlikely, with the biggest question now being where he ends up.
For that to be Ibrox, the Gers will have to pull out all the stops if they’re to beat the likes of Liverpool, let alone Celtic, to Miller’s signature, and it remains to be seen what they’re able to offer in January.
The club’s transfer strategy is dependent on Philippe Clement continuing as manager due to the compensation he’d be owed if sacked, but the Belgian will be keen to strengthen in midfield.
Clement, however, can arguably offer Miller something which Brendan Rodgers and Arne Slot wouldn’t be able to – a regular starting place in a team competing on multiple fronts this season.
The Gers could already be Scottish League Cup winners before the turn of the year and if Miller wants to be the new figurehead of the rebuilding project, Ibrox might just be the destination for him.
In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson flagged up John Gilligan’s recent comments about the state of the Ibrox board as ‘clumsy‘.
