Pundit View: Player to make Tottenham transfer decision, he will want to start now

Tottenham are unlikely to sign Manchester City defender Yan Couto due to Pedro Porro’s first-team status under Ange Postecoglou, Paul Robinson has said.

According to Fichajes [25 June], Spurs are set to go head-to-head with Aston Villa for the signing of the Brazilian right-back this summer, though Man City have not decided on the player’s future yet.

The 22-year-old has failed to break into Pep Guardiola’s side since arriving from Coritiba in the summer of 2020, being sent out on numerous loan spells, impressing mostly last season with Girona.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “For him personally, I think he’s been out on loan that many times that he’ll want something more permanent where he’s guaranteed to play.

“A player of his calibre and the loans he’s had, he’s not going to want to go somewhere and be part of a squad as anything other than the first choice.

“With Tottenham competing in Europe next year, squad depth is an argument for his signing, but for his opportunities, he won’t want to just be part of a squad. He’ll want to be the Pedro Porro of a squad.

“It’s highly unlikely unless he plays. Nobody is guaranteed a first-team place, but he’ll sign for a club where he has a better opportunity to play. I can’t see him fitting into the starting XI at Spurs. At this stage in his career, I don’t think a squad position is preferential for him.”

Considering Porro’s outstanding performances last term, it seems highly unlikely that Spurs will be able to secure the talented full-back’s signature this summer.

The Brazilian notched one goal and eight assists in 34 La Liga matches last season as Girona created a fairytale story in Spain, so it comes as no surprise to see teams now interested in the player.

However, it may take a lot of convincing if Spurs are to agree terms with the full-back if Porro is unlikely to budge from his starting position.
