'Can't say no' - New Rangers signing already wants contract extension after 'Surreal' move

Liam Kelly has admitted he couldn’t turn down the chance to return to Rangers this summer because he never thought he’d get the chance.

The former Motherwell keeper returned to Ibrox this summer after leaving Fir Park to sign a two-year deal under Philippe Clement.

Kelly replaces Robby McCrorie, who has since joined Kilmarnock, behind Jack Butland and already hopes to secure himself a contract extension as there is “nowhere else I would rather be”.

He told Rangers Review’s Chris Jack (13 July) at the club’s Netherlands training camp: “I am delighted to be here. Being at a club like Motherwell, who did so well for me, and then a club like Rangers come in for you it is difficult to say no.

“You can’t say no, can you? I am buzzing to be here. It is a club I know really well. I spent half my life here and half not here. I am so happy to be back and I am looking forward to it.

“When you leave you think it is not going to happen again. When the club comes calling, you are over the moon, so happy, buzzing. It is quite surreal to be back. It was a quick summer and quick turnaround. Happy to be here…

“I am here for two years as well so I will still be young when my contract finishes. Hopefully, it goes to play and I can be here for much longer than that. There will still be opportunities for me to go and play if I need to but there is nowhere else I would rather be.”

Liam Kelly replaces Robby McCrorie in Motherwell to Rangers move

Kelly left the Light Blues six years ago without making a first-team appearance for the club but has gone onto become a Scottish Premiership regular.

He is aware of the risk he has taken to go from playing 38 league games in three successive seasons at Motherwell to sitting behind star man Butland back at Ibrox but clearly felt he had unfinished business in Glasgow.

McCrorie only managed a single cup appearance under Philippe Clement last term thanks to the form of the ex-England international in front of him so Kelly may have to get used to the bench.

But there has long been speculation that Butland could be subject to major transfer bids from the Premier League [Jack, 4 June] so if the current situation were to change Kelly would be expected to step up.

And the 28-year-old’s return arguably offers hope to the likes of McCrorie, and potentially Kieran Wright among others, that the door is not necessarily closed on a Gers career even if a transfer exit is required to find first-team football.

In other Rangers news, a transfer update has emerged from the Netherlands training camp with major activity seen from Nils Koppen.
