Rangers approach league champions to sign new midfielder - report

Rangers have made an enquiry on a potential deal to sign Young Boys’ Cheikh Niasse, Gianluigi Longari reports.

According to the Sport Italia journalist via X on 13 July the Light Blues have indicated their interest in the central midfielder from the Swiss side.

This comes after Longari’s previous report on 27 June that Serie A’s Udinese had also come forward for the 24-year-old to check on his availability.

Philippe Clement has already signed a midfielder in Connor Barron from Aberdeen and has been linked with a deal to add Norwich City captain Kenny McLean [Daily Record, 24 June].

Young Boys’ answer has yet to emerge so Clement and Nils Koppen could be sent on their way since Niasse was a regular starter as they won the Super League title last term.

He also had experience in both the Champions League and the Europa League so it makes sense why Rangers are interested but also might suggest it is a tough deal to push through.

McLean looked to be in line for a surprisingly-fast agreement to leave Carrow Road for the club he supports [Jonny McFarlane, 1 July] and could potentially still arrive despite some claims the move was off [Rangers Review, 5 July].

At 32 the man who was said to be the best player in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad at Euro 2024 may have the ability but whether he would provide value for money is the age-old question.

Rangers are interested in signing Cheikh Niasse from the Swiss champions.

Niasse is older than Barron, 21, and the host of youngsters that have already come in this summer but perhaps isn’t the experienced profile that Clement has stated he is now looking for [BBC Sport, 29 June].

But with the struggle to shed senior players seemingly frustrating progress in the transfer window he and Koppen will likely need to get creative and investigate all avenues.

In other Rangers news, a new Light Blues signing is already hoping to get a contract extension before the end of his new deal.
