Rangers 'phone-ins and chat boards on fire' after shock twist - Keith Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Rangers fans must “look at themselves” and realise the club are “not the power they once were”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Gers fans should have more patience with Philippe Clement as the real problems are at “board level”, with “recruitment and operations”.

Rangers suffered a shock 1-0 away loss against Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October) to pile pressure on Clement.

The Ibrox club missed an opportunity to close the gap to Aberdeen and Celtic and are now six points adrift of the joint leaders.

Speculation about Clement’s future comes despite the board awarding him a new contract during the summer transfer window, extending his Ibrox stay until 2028.

‘Rangers not the power they once were’ – fans must realise this, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’ve been saying all along that they shouldn’t be sacking Clement.

“Of all the things they need to change right now, the manager isn’t one of them.

“However, when you lose 1-0 at Kilmarnock, that’s a big one for the Rangers fans to take.

“The phone-ins and chat boards were on fire, asking for Clement to go.

“But I’m afraid the Rangers fans have got to take a big, hard look at themselves in the mirror and realise that the club is not where they should be. Rangers are not the power they once were, and the fans have to accept that – for now.”

“That’s in terms of recruitment and operations, and so on.

“The problems are at the board level. This is a club in need of a reset, and they’ve got to take it on.”
