Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has backed Wolves to keep Gary O’Neil in charge despite their winless start this term.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Molineux faithful aren’t yet “unhappy” with the 41-year-old with his side still fighting to turn results around.

Wolves suffered a last-gasp defeat at home against champions Man City on Sunday (20 October), keeping them on one point and bottom of the table.

O’Neil’s side had taken the lead through Jorgen Strand Larsen but were pegged back by Josko Gvardiol before John Stones headed home a 95th-minute winner.

Football Insider revealed last week (15 October), before the City loss, that Wolves remain fully behind their manager despite the terrible start to the season.

Wyness claimed the fans recognise have had “unlucky breaks” so far in the 2024-25 campaign.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Wolves were very unlucky against Man City at the weekend.

“The offside decision was wrong, for me. The team were playing really well against City.

“They’re bottom, but I don’t sense any unhappiness from the fans.

“They recognise the team have had a couple of unlucky breaks.

“Wolves, like Palace, I think they’ll be okay. Last season, they had a bad start but they got going in the end.

“O’Neil will do the same thing again.

“I think they’ll carry on and keep that stability – the team are playing well for him.”
