'Really Bad News' - Keith Wyness: Rangers devastated by 'worst-possible' Ibrox blow

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers now face a “one or two-season rebuild” after being dumped out of the Champions League.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted their early exit was probably the “worst possible outcome” for the Gers.

Rangers lost 3-1 on aggregate against Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League third qualifying round and will now play in the Europa League.

Football Insider revealed last week (14 August) that Philippe Clement’s side have missed out on earning an extra £40million in revenue following their elimination.

Old Firm rivals Celtic will play in the league phase of the Champions League after winning the Scottish Premiership last term.

Rangers must undertake ‘one or two-season rebuild’, says Wyness

Wyness insisted Rangers chiefs must find ways to bring in extra financial resources to achieve the rebuild.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’ve got to now look at a one or two-season rebuild.

“Rangers have got to back Clement to do that.

“However, with the pressure coming from the fanbase – it’s very hard to see that longer-term strategic rebuild.

“Nevertheless, that would be my advice. At the board level, they’ve got to find ways to bring more financial resources in to achieve that.

“There may be some restructuring.

“Hopefully, they’ll get their stadium back in September or early October. That will be positive, but there will be a lot of mess to clean up.

“The loss in the Champions League was really bad news and probably the worst possible outcome for them.”
