'Really Strange' – Clement accepts apology after what Rangers man did v FCSB

Philippe Clement accepted Cyriel Dessers’ apology after the Rangers striker left the pitch against FSCB on Thursday (24 October).

Speaking to BBC Sportsound post-match (24 October, 10:29pm), Clement said that having injured his eye in a challenge, Dessers ran off the pitch after Vaclav Cerny’s goal despite not being asked to.

The unplanned substitution resulted in Hamza Igamane coming on to score his first Gers goal, but the Belgian said Dessers had apologised for his spontaneous exit in the 4-0 victory.

Clement said: “Cyriel gets a knock or a finger, something in his eye.

“He was quite emotional about it, because he wanted to stay on the pitch, but he didn’t see anything so he ran off the pitch – it was a really strange moment for me, but he apologised after the game.

“It was in the emotions of wanting to win, wanting to react, wanting to play well – which he was doing – so no problems with that, but it’s good lessons also for this young squad.”

Cyriel Dessers injury reaction shows commitment to Rangers cause

Running off the pitch unannounced – particularly in the pandemonium after Gers’ game-sealing goal – wasn’t the smartest move Dessers could have made, but Clement will be happy to put the issue to bed.

Having been caught in the eye a few minutes prior, Dessers did his best to continue [David Edgar, 24 October], but as his vision began to fail him, frustration took over in a microcosm of the striker’s recent fortunes in front of goal.

The Nigerian netted seven goals in his first nine games of the season, but is yet to find the net since, and regardless of how hard he toils, that accuracy in the box has evaded him as the pressure mounts.

Clement still sees the 29-year-old as his first-choice striker – thanks to a lack of credible alternatives – and having received an apology from Dessers, will expect him to be fit and firing in three days’ time.

A return to Ibrox against St. Mirren is next up on 27 October, and if that proves to be the game in which Dessers breaks his duck, there’ll be no-one more delighted than Clement.
