Gary Keown believes Philippe Clement’s faith at Rangers could be tested if the Belgium job becomes available after key resignations from the hierarchy.
The 50-year-old signed a new contract at Ibrox over the summer but has come under fire in recent weeks for the Gers’ form and performances.
The Belgian hasn’t been alone in that criticism with John Bennett suffering the same treatment before resigning.
Writing for the Scottish Mail on Sunday (22 September, page 99), Keown has suggested that Clement could leave as senior roles have been left empty.
He said: “Vital positions within the club remain unfilled. It is an organisation that just stinks of stagnation.
“Even manager Philippe Clement revealed just over a week ago that he ‘had the choice to make in the summer’ to carry on even though he knows ‘ the challenge is much bigger than it was last season’.
“Had Domenico Tedesco been emptied as Belgium head coach that decision may have been a little more testing. Other than a new long-term contract, it is hard to know what led Clement to keep the faith.”
Philippe Clement Rangers faith to be tested
The Light Blues’ manager has come under pressure to begin the season after a poor end to last campaign.
This hasn’t been helped by a poor string of results which has seen Celtic extend their gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers fell to defeat in the Old Firm just weeks after dropping out of the Champions League against Dynamo Kyiv at Hampden Park.
This has been the tip of the iceberg after a summer of turbulence with Bennett and the Ibrox fiasco which has caused unrest amongst supporters.
With the chairman stepping down for health reasons, there is an opportunity for the club to rebuild and grow closer towards their Glasgow rivals.
Given that the role has remained unfilled so far and doesn’t appear to have a quick fix to the situation.
To avoid any further frustration for supporters, Clement needs to turn things around and hope the boardroom scene resolves itself as well.
