Report: Liverpool could actually try to sign £80m England star later in this window

Liverpool could make a big-money move to sign a player from their Premier League rivals this summer.

Arne Slot has started working with Reds players on the training pitch, and the videos Liverpool have released have excited all the fans.

The Merseysiders have a lot of work to do off the pitch as well. They haven’t signed any new players yet, but that is expected to change in the coming weeks.

Slot will want a few names in before the start of the new Premier League season, and Richard Hughes is working hard behind the scenes to make that happen.

Liverpool have been linked with plenty of names in recent weeks. Here’s the latest on one of them.

Liverpool could still make a move to sign Anthony Gordon

The Anthony Gordon transfer saga may not be over just yet.

The Englishman was one of Newcastle United’s best players in the 2023/24 season. He scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists, which is a very good return for a wide player.

His performances put him on the Reds’ radar, and Liverpool have had an interest in signing Gordon for quite some time now.

Newcastle United’s issues with PSR opened the door for the Reds, and reports claimed that Gordon even wanted the move to Liverpool

However, the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh eased the Magpies’ financial worries, and they no longer have to sell their star players.

Liverpool haven’t been in any talks with Newcastle for Gordon since the whole PSR saga came to an end, but that doesn’t mean their interest has gone away.

TEAMtalk has revealed that the prospect of Gordon moving to Liverpool ‘lit a spark inside both the player and Reds boss Slot’.

That’s why it has been claimed that a move from Liverpool to sign Gordon later in this window ‘cannot entirely be ruled out’. However, the report says Newcastle’s £80 million valuation makes things difficult.

GiveMeSport add that Liverpool remain keen on Gordon and will seriously consider making an offer to sign him if an opportunity arises later in the window.

Liverpool should sell one player before thinking of signing Gordon

Liverpool’s interest in Gordon makes a lot of sense.

The 23-year-old, despite his past connection with Everton, has all the qualities to succeed at Anfield. He’s quick, good on the ball, great in counter-attacks, and his numbers prove that he is productive too.

Liverpool are right to target Gordon, but we think the only way a move would be worth it is if the Reds sold Luis Diaz first.

The Colombian is a fantastic player to watch. His dribbling and skills on the ball always raise the excitement levels at Anfield, but Diaz’s output is just not good enough.

Diaz has scored just 24 goals in 98 games for Liverpool. He should be doing a lot better considering the amount of chances the Reds create, but he just hasn’t been able to do that on a consistent basis.

If they can get a good offer, Liverpool should sell Diaz this summer. Then, we think they should use that money to sign Gordon before the window shuts.
