Liverpool had a quiet transfer window, but they did make one major addition this summer.
Federico Chiesa joined the Reds for £10m towards the end of the transfer window, and to say that this could be an incredible signing is an understatement.
Chiesa, at his best, is a world-class talent, and getting the winger for just £10m is a brilliant deal.
However, in another world, this deal wouldn’t have happened.
Indeed, Liverpool were in for Anthony Gordon earlier this summer, and according to The Athletic, Gordon’s arrival at Anfield would have affected the Reds’ pursuit of Chiesa.
What Liverpool would’ve done if Anthony Gordon signed
According to The Athletic, Liverpool would only have gone in for Chiesa after getting Gordon if another attacker departed.
In all likelihood, this means that Liverpool wouldn’t have gone for Chiesa if they signed Gordon this summer.
Luis Diaz was linked with Barcelona, but according to this report, Liverpool never considered selling the Colombian.
Federico Chiesa is a better signing than Anthony Gordon
Liverpool ultimately ended up with Chiesa instead of Gordon, and there’s a strong argument to make that this is the better signing.
Chiesa was much cheaper than Gordon at £10m, and he’s much more proven.
With all due respect, Gordon has spent most of his career playing for mid-table Premier League sides, while Chiesa is a player with lots of Champions League experience and he’s a European Championships winner.
Of course, Gordon is homegrown, younger and Premier League proven, but for their respective pricetags, it has to be said that Chiesa is the better buy.
Both players are fantastic wide options, but due to the pricetag, experience and ability that Chiesa brings, you have to commend the Reds’ business here.
This may well prove to be one of the signings of the summer.
