Rúben Amorim won’t hesitate to part ways with Marcus Rashford if the forward fails to step up his Man United performances over the next six months, says Gabby Agbonlahor.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the ex-Aston Villa striker criticised the 27-year-olds current attitude and effort levels, urging the England international to rediscover the hunger he displayed as a youth player breaking into the first team at Old Trafford.
“Remember when you broke into the first team, how you felt, how happy you was, how you loved playing for Manchester United, how you celebrated goals, how you were the hardest worker on the pitch? You’re 27, before you know it you’ll be in the your 30s. Do you want to go down the [Jesse] Lingard route?”
The former Villa captain also pointed out that Amorim’s tactical preferences might make it even harder for Rashford to secure a starting spot. The Portuguese manager is known for utilising formations like 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, which could leave little room for the England ace alongside other attacking players.
“[Arorim’s] come into United to succeed, he’s not come in to just pick players who have been there for a while. If you’re not at it, some of these players have got six months to the summer window. If you’re not at it you’re gone…
“There’s probably not space for both Garnacho and Rashford. Looking at a 3-4-3 you’d probably say Garnacho, [Rasmus] Højlund, and maybe an Amad [Diallo] that you’d pick.”
Asked if the England man could be jettisoned he said: “100% this summer, if he’s not at it over the next six months, I’m sure Amorim will get rid of him”.
Marcus Rashford’s struggles this season are a concern for the Red Devils
Football Insider opinion
A local lad with an incredible story, Rashford burst onto the scene with a blend of blistering pace, skill, and an uncanny ability to deliver in clutch moments.
After a career-best campaign in 2022/23, where he was United’s standout attacking with 30 goals in all competitions, the number 10 has struggled to replicate that form over the past two seasons, leaving fans and pundits asking serious questions about his consistency and commitment.
His body language on the pitch often looks lacklustre, and he appears to lack the sharpness and drive that once defined his game. Despite continuing to showcase moments of brilliance, those moments have become increasingly rare.
One of the most concerning aspects of Rashford’s play this season is his decision-making. Too often, he seems to take one touch too many, hold onto the ball when a pass is the better option, or drift out of games entirely.
Statistics paint an equally troubling picture. The Manc’s goal and assist contributions have plummeted, and he’s struggled to link up effectively with new signing Højlund. Whether it’s a tactical issue, a lack of chemistry, or simply poor form, the disconnect between Rashford and United’s frontline has been glaring.
