Shearer shares Everton takeover verdict, predicts result v Chelsea

Alan Shearer says The Friedkin Group’s takeover is “great news” for Everton, but does not expect it to have any effect on the pitch against Chelsea.

The Friedkins are already making changes behind the scenes, having this week taken majority control at Goodison Park.

Everton’s first match since that news was confirmed comes against Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday (22 December).

Sharing his prediction for the match in his column for The Metro’s website [21 December], Shearer said: “Everton should take confidence from last weekend. Jordan Pickford was outstanding.

“Also with the takeover, great news for Everton looking forward but I don’t think that’ll have too much of an effect on the pitch.

“I think that the form Chelsea are in, the teams [Enzo] Maresca is able to put out I’d think that Chelsea will go to Goodison and take all the points.

“Any team that are sat in second, in the form that Chelsea are in, are in the title race. But I still think they’ll have a blip and I’m not sure they’ll end up in second but they’re there and you have to take them seriously.

“You can’t just say they have no chance. Of course they’ve got a chance. I still don’t think they’ll win it, though. Prediction: Chelsea win.”

Everton record versus Chelsea

Everton have won five of their past six Premier League home games against Chelsea, losing the other in that run.

To put that into some perspective, that is as many wins as they managed in their previous 17 against the Blues at Goodison Park.

Chelsea were 6-0 winners the last time the sides met, but they have not beaten the Toffees in successive matches since a run of three wins in a row between November 2016 and August 2017.

Goodison will well and truly be rocking on Sunday now that the takeover has officially gone through, although it is still not clear if Dan Friedkin will be in attendance.

The future remains unclear at Goodison Park

Everton have turned a corner in recent weeks, with a 4-0 win over Wolves followed by a goalless draw at Arsenal last time out.

And if supporters were to be offered a point against high-flying Chelsea right now, I’m sure the vast majority of them would happily accept that.

In other Everton news, one player is unlikely to start a game again this calendar year.
