Sky Sports shares transfer update on exit-linked Rangers attacker

Rangers midfielder Ianis Hagi is unlikely to leave for a return to Romania, according to Sky Sports.

As reported on the Sky transfer centre [24 August], it is understood Hagi does not look like heading back to his homeland, despite interest from two clubs.

Rapid Bucharest and Universitatea Craiova were both credited with an interest in the 25-year-old, who would be content with staying at Rangers but has been demoted to the club’s B team.

Ianis Hagi will not head back to Romania

Hagi is in a difficult situation whereby following his return from La Liga with Alaves – an uninspiring spell – he would happily remain in Glasgow, but his Rangers contract poses a problem.

It was reported by the Daily Record [13 August] that should Hagi surpass the 100-appearance milestone for the Light Blues, an added £6,000 per week would be hiked onto his deal – a clause put in place under a previous regime. He has played 99.

As a result, the Romania international, who reached the furthest stage of all the Gers players to feature at Euro 2024, has been bombed out to the B team.

Todd Cantwell and Scott Wright are also among those the club are attempting to offload, whilst Rabbi Matondo could leave this week too. Cantwell has opted out of playing for the B team as he hunts an exit [Scottish Daily Mail, 24 August].

Hagi will fancy his chances at a more lucrative switch than back to his nation at this stage of his career, with his employers hoping for a strong approach from another suitor in the coming days as Philippe Clement aims to bring in further recruits, which depends on sales.

In other Rangers news, developments may occur on the pursuit of Lewis Travis.
