'Snapped up' - Chris Sutton issues £5m verdict as Rangers eye new transfer

Rangers will not be able to afford the services of Lennon Miller but Celtic can, believes Chris Sutton.

The former Hoops striker is of the opinion that the Motherwell midfielder will cost £5million.

In Sutton’s view, that puts him out of Gers’ price range as it will be a lot of money to spend on an 18-year-old prospect.

He told the Daily Record: “There have been various numbers banded around and it seems £5million might be the figure. That might sound a lot for a development player but it’s not really. Celtic can afford it – and they could blow Rangers out of the water if they fancy a look at the youngster.

“There’s no way they are going to pay that kind of dosh for a prospect, even if they did get burned with the Lewis Ferguson situation. There was a player they could have snapped up for a song but is now way beyond their means.”

Rangers are undoubtedly in a bit of a financial crunch

Despite their aspirations, the lack of Champions League revenue has significantly impacted their transfer budget.

Recent financial reports have shown Rangers posting losses of £17million, which underscores a need for fiscal prudence rather than lavish spending.

The transfer market demands hefty investments for promising young talents and with Miller’s price tag of around £5million, this falls into the category of expenditures that Gers might need to approach with caution.

Unfortunately, Celtic’s superior financial position allows them greater flexibility in the market.

For the Ibrox outfit, focusing on sustainable growth, cost-effective signings and possibly more developmental or loan options might be the prudent path forward rather than risking financial stability on a single large transfer fee for an 18-year-old prospect.

It remains to be seen if Celtic can manage to sign Miller or if a side south of the border snaps up his services.
