Sources: Liverpool could sign England international in '£40m' deal

Liverpool could sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in a cut-price deal, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the 24-year-old could be available for between £40-50million next summer.

The Reds were in the market for a left-sided centre-back in the summer, and the money is there for Arne Slot to spend should he want to strengthen this area.

Sources have told Football Insider that Palace will have to significantly lower their asking price for Guehi next summer as he will only have one year left on his deal at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles had been demanding £70million plus during their negotiations with Newcastle this summer, but Guehi could be in a strong position if he runs down his contract.

It will open the doors for the likes of Liverpool to try and sign him at a cheaper rate, as Palace will be forced to accept lower bids or sell him for free the following summer.

Liverpool need a new centre-back in the long term due to Virgil van Dijk being 33, even though he has indicated that he would like to remain at Anfield.

The Netherlands international is out of contract at the club next summer, and Slot is looking to prepare for life after the experienced defender moves on.

Football Insider reported that Slot has been convinced that Guehi can fill that role based on his performances this season.

Newcastle are expected to remain interested in Guehi, but Football Insider revealed that he has told friends he would love to join Liverpool.

The England international sees the Reds as a “bigger club” than Newcastle, which is why he would prefer a move to Anfield.
