Stefan Borson: Everton takeover could prompt dramatic U-turn after Man Utd transfer twist

Uefa are likely to bring in rules to accommodate multi-clubs models after Man United have been blocked from signing Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo this summer.

That is the view of former Man City financial advisor Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider The Friedkin Group’s proposed takeover at Everton is an indicator the governing body are going to work with multi-club ownership groups moving forward.

The US firm, owned by Dan Friedkin, has agreed a deal in principle to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1 per cent stake in the Merseyside giants.

The 59-year-old bought Italian side Roma in 2020 before recently entering into a period of exclusivity to try and get a takeover deal over the line at Goodison Park.

The multi-club model has recently been brought into question after Nice and Man United, both of which INEOS owns shares in, qualified for the Europa League next season.

It has emerged the Premier League club have been blocked from signing summer transfer target Todibo due to Uefa’s rules around multi-club ownership trading players.

Man United chief unlikely to sell Nice stake despite transfer news

Borson believes the news is unlikely to force Sir Jim Ratcliffe into selling his stake in Nice to overcome these types of issues moving forward.

He told Football Insider: “I think it will probably go the other way and you’ll see Uefa bring in rules that accommodate multi-club models in a slightly different way.

“The biggest indicator is the Everton situation.

“If Friedkin Group feel they can own Roma and Everton, where you don’t have clear distinction between the senior and junior club, you would absolutely think other groups are going to be able to navigate those issues without selling.

“I think it’s more about the timing of Man United and Nice ending up in the same competition, caused by the late qualification by United in the end.

“I wouldn’t read too much into it more generally.”

In other news, Man United to announce defender deal soon.
