Stefan Borson: Liverpool owners impressed by Man City after behind-the-scenes talks

Liverpool and other Premier League clubs’ owners have been impressed by the development of Manchester City’s multi-club model.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s a natural progression for Fenway Sports Group (FSG) to find other football clubs who can join Liverpool in their portfolio.

It has been revealed FSG is in talks to buy struggling French club Bordeaux after they were recently provisionally relegated to the third tier due to funding concerns.

The Boston-based firm appointed Michael Edwards as its chief executive of football earlier this year, with the offer including him helping to identify and manage a second club.

Multi-club models have become increasingly popular in recent years, with the City Football Group’s portfolio now comprising 13 sides.

Liverpool multi-club plans are natural progression for FSG

Borson believes American owners – like FSG – believe the multi-club model is a way to deliver a successful operation.

“We are seeing the development of multi-club ownership,” Borson told Football Insider.

“Clearly, people have looked at the situation at Man City, the City Football Group, and have been impressed and believe in that.

“I think the Americans in particular believe that is a model that can be successful.

“If you look at the investors that have backed City, Silver Lake are one of the leading investment capital investors in the world.

“If you look at the way they describe their investment in the City Football Group, it’s very much focused on the benefits of having multiple clubs developing a best-of-breed approach to football clubs in multiple jurisdictions.

“We have seen Chelsea started that process with Strasbourg and are likely to buy another club going forward, so they believe in it.

“INEOS in terms of Man United, they have the other clubs in their stable, so they believe in it as well.

“It’s a natural progression for Liverpool to look for clubs to fall into their group.”
