Stefan Borson: People are 'celebrating' as high-profile Chelsea exit confirmed

Chelsea’s former chief executive Chris Jurasek was an unpopular figure before his recent departure from the club.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider there has been a lot of “negative” press about the American businessman since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Jurasek, who oversaw the business side of the club, was appointed in May 2023.

He joined the club from Clearlake Capital, the US private equity firm that part owns Chelsea alongside chairman Todd Boehly.

Chelsea confirmed in a statement on 5 September Jurasek has now left the club, with Jason Gannon promoted to president and chief operating officer.

Jurasek has been an unpopular figure among the club’s fans since cutting the away travel subsidies.

Borson suggested there is probably going to be more changes at Stamford Bridge before the ownership gets things right.

He told Football Insider: “I don’t know the outgoing CEO, but there has been some pretty negative press about the individual.

“It seems like a number of people seem to be celebrating his departure within the organisation, which is never a great sign. There has been a lot of change at Chelsea.

“They are obviously a club that are trying to do things different from the past and even from the rest of the game. That will have some growing pains.

“Again, it’s not unusual for that to be the case where you have got disruptive owners, who are trying to do something in a different way.

“That’s what we are seeing there and we will probably continue to see change that will filter out until they get it right.

“They will hope that everything they are doing at the moment is pushing them in the right direction, such that they are closer to getting it right and are closer to getting back in the Champions League and winning trophies again.”
