Stefan Borson reveals £900m Man City 'red herring'

It is a “complete red herring” that the legal battle between Man City and the Premier League will have an impact on the £900million deal to fund the EFL.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that reports of City causing the EFL deal to collapse is “pure PR”.

As reported by The Times, City’s legal action against the Premier League has put the £900million deal to fund the EFL at risk.

They report that some Premier League sides are reluctant to commit extra funds to the EFL in case the financial rules that limit spending in the top flight are deemed unlawful.

The Premier League and EFL have been in talks over the ‘New Deal’ for months with the top flight pledging funds to help support the wider English football pyramid.

However, reports back in March revealed that the Premier League and EFL had failed to come to an agreement with top-flight clubs walking away from negotiations.

Man City legal battle will not impact £900m EFL deal

Borson believes the City case will have no impact on the EFL deal as the Premier League had already failed to come to an agreement over how to distribute funds.

“The idea that the City case will impact the EFL deal is pure PR,” Borson told Football Insider.

“It is PR either by the Premier League themselves or by the clubs who are opposed to City’s challenge.

“They hadn’t agreed the EFL deal anyway, so I’m not sure what they’re assessing to have collapsed as they hadn’t agreed it.

“So I think it’s a complete red herring, but we’ll have to see.

“We are basing all this on very limited information.

“We have one credible article which has clearly been briefed by one club who are not City, and therefore it’s only a partial look at the case.“
