'Step Backwards' - Pundit admits CL midfielder may snub £50m Tottenham transfer

Aston Villa winger Jacob Ramsey could snub a move to Tottenham even if the two clubs agree a transfer fee, according to Alan Hutton.

Ange Postecoglou’s side continue to hold an interest in the 22-year-old attacking midfielder, with reports suggesting they could be willing to explore a potential player-plus-cash swap deal [Sky Sports, 8 July].

Although Villa are understood to be reluctant to let the academy graduate depart his sale would represent pure profit and therefore balance the books and help Unai Emery’s side comply with PSR.

Hutton isn’t convinced Spurs will be willing to match the Villans’ £50million asking price and has been left questioning if a move to Spurs would be a step backwards given the fact Villa are in the Champions League.

“I think Villa will ask for about £50million if I’m honest,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He’s a top talent, he’s come through the youth ranks, they won’t want to sell him but they will know it is all profit.

“The way the market is at this moment in time that’s probably around about the number they’ll be looking for. Will Spurs be willing to pay that? I’m not so sure.

“He’s so young, he’s got so much potential and he’s not hit his ceiling yet by any means so I think for him to go there, will he see that as a step up, the same level or a step backwards?

“It’s one of those where you look at Villa who are in the Champions League at this moment in time, they’re building for the future with experienced players and young players.

“They’re trying to do something, is that not what you want to be part of? I would, but it just comes down to the financial aspect, are Villa willing and ready to cash in and let that prospect go?

“We’ll have to wait and see.”

Will Jacob Ramsey exit Aston Villa amid Tottenham transfer rumours?

While Spurs fans would be quick to argue that moving from Villa to Tottenham is a step down, this is an issue that Postecoglou’s side will now face having missed out on the top four at the end of last season.

Ange Postecoglou has big decisions to make at Tottenham this summer

Players want to be playing Champions League football and while that is on offer at Villa Park and not in North London, the Villans could have the run on the Lilywhites when it comes to recruitment.

Luckily, the current financial climate of the Premier League means that things are not quite that cut and dry.

If the financial incentive of a deal is enticing enough, Spurs may still be able to find a way to get their man this summer.
