'Strange' - Sky journalist slams Postecoglou after what he saw Tottenham manager do last night

Dan Bardell thinks it was “strange” for Ange Postecoglou to call out Timo Werner after Tottenham drew to Rangers on Thursday.

At half time at Ibrox on 12 November, the Germany international was hooked and replaced by Dejan Kulusevski after a poor opening 45 minutes.

After the full-time whistle in Glasgow, the Spurs boss called out the 28-year-old suggesting that his performance was “not acceptable” [BBC Sport].

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes this direct address was bizarre and is unlikely to end positively for the Australian.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell said: “Spurs have got attacking players missing so they need Werner at the moment.

“That’s why I thought it was strange to call him out, especially given that he’s a confidence player.

“It was strange that Postecoglou would use this time when they’re very up and down themselves to call a player out.

“He’s a player who needs rhythm and games and he doesn’t get that at Spurs which makes it more difficult for him.

“I thought it was strange from Postecoglou, I’m not sure what there was to gain from him doing that.“

The Spurs boss picked out the forward for a disappointing performance against the Gers which would be fair but Werner wasn’t alone in that.

The change did pull off as Kulusevski came on to score the eventual equaliser but that doesn’t excuse Postecoglou’s post-match comments.

During a poor run of form, picking out individuals for harsh criticism could prove to be a mistake in the short term as his confidence is likely to be as low as possible right now.
